Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify outlet voltage and remove extension cords from the diagnostic path.
  2. Inspect input cord and plug for damage from storage or transport.
  3. If the machine is still dead on a known-good outlet, escalate.

2. Powers up but no welding output

  1. Inspect holder and clamp leads for looseness and heat damage.
  2. Retest with a known-good small dry electrode on clean steel.
  3. If there is no output with good leads and correct setup, escalate.

3. Feed, arc-start, or cut-start problem

  1. Most start complaints on this platform are rod-choice, rod-condition, or work-contact problems.
  2. If the complaint is in lift-TIG mode, verify torch valve, gas flow, tungsten, and polarity path first.
  3. Keep the diagnosis in the accessory branch unless SMAW is also abnormal.

4. Poor arc quality / unstable output

  1. Small 120 V arc machines are very sensitive to weak utility power and light-gauge extension cords.
  2. Inspect the clamp point and holder jaws for heat and poor grip.
  3. Escalate only if the machine is unstable directly on a verified outlet with dry rods and cool leads.

5. Gas and consumable related faults

  1. Lift-TIG use requires correct torch and gas setup; porosity and bad starts are usually setup faults.
  2. Regrind tungsten and inspect hose sealing.
  3. Do not treat TIG accessory faults as internal power-source faults unless SMAW is also bad.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Confirm airflow is not blocked and the machine is not packed with dust.
  2. Inspect plug, cord, and output leads for heating after the complaint.
  3. Persistent shutdown from a cold start indicates escalation.
