Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Confirm actual input source and inspect any adapter or cord set used.
  2. Check for heat damage at the plug and receptacle.
  3. If dead on known-good input with no external power-path fault found, escalate.

2. Powers up but no welding output

  1. Inspect output connectors and both leads for looseness, broken strands, or heating.
  2. Retest with known-good dry electrodes on clean steel.
  3. If output is still absent, escalate.

3. Feed, arc-start, or cut-start problem

  1. Treat most stick-start complaints as rod/work-return/setup problems first.
  2. For lift-TIG use, verify gas flow, tungsten prep, torch valve, and polarity path.
  3. If stick output is good, the remaining complaint is usually accessory-side.

4. Poor arc quality / unstable output

  1. Differentiate normal 120 V limitation from true instability.
  2. Inspect the work clamp and holder for heat damage and weak mechanical grip.
  3. Escalate only after poor arc is confirmed on solid 240 V power with good leads and dry rod.

5. Gas and consumable related faults

  1. For lift-TIG, verify the complete gas path and torch sealing.
  2. Regrind tungsten and inspect cup/collet condition.
  3. Porosity and erratic starts almost always belong in the accessory branch first.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Confirm fan path is clean and unobstructed.
  2. Inspect input adapters and plug blades for heating after load.
  3. If the machine still faults early from a cold start, escalate.
