Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify the 230 V branch circuit and inspect receptacle and plug condition.
  2. Inspect the input cord and switch area for damage or heating.
  3. If still dead on verified power, escalate.

2. Powers up but no welding output

  1. Inspect holder lead, work lead, and output lugs for looseness or heat damage.
  2. Retest with known-good dry electrodes on clean steel.
  3. Inspect the range selector and all external connection points for signs of heating or mechanical looseness.
  4. If there is still no usable output, escalate.

3. Feed, arc-start, or cut-start problem

  1. Stick-start complaints on transformer units are usually rod condition, clamp quality, or wrong current selection.
  2. Confirm work-return quality and appropriate rod size for the selected current.
  3. If the complaint is harsh AC behavior, verify rod type is suitable for AC service before condemning the machine.
  4. If starts remain poor with good leads and dry rod, escalate.

4. Poor arc quality / unstable output

  1. Inspect the complete current path first because poor clamp contact can mimic a weak transformer.
  2. Check for long leads, hot lugs, and low branch voltage under load.
  3. Strong hum with weak weld output should trigger branch-voltage and connection checks before internal diagnosis.
  4. Escalate only after the machine remains unstable with short known-good leads and verified power.

5. Gas and consumable related faults

  1. This model is stick-only; consumable-side faults are electrode-storage and wrong-rod issues.
  2. Rule out wet rods before deeper machine diagnosis.
  3. If one rod family behaves much worse than another, keep the diagnosis in rod suitability and storage before widening it.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Inspect vents and cooling path for blockage.
  2. Check switch, plug, leads, and output hardware for heat after load.
  3. Early breaker trip or hot-switch behavior usually points to branch or switch/contact deterioration before deeper internal failure.
  4. Repeat breaker trip or overheating behavior from a cold start indicates escalation.
