Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify actual branch voltage and inspect the plug or receptacle path.
  2. Inspect the cord, switch path, and case for impact or transport damage.
  3. If dead on verified power, escalate.

2. Powers up but no welding output

  1. Strip the machine to a simple local stick baseline with known-good leads.
  2. If stick is healthy, keep the remaining complaint in the TIG torch, gas, or remote branch.
  3. If both processes remain abnormal, escalate core power-source diagnosis.

3. Feed, arc-start, or cut-start problem

  1. For TIG, verify gas flow, tungsten prep, torch front-end sealing, and pedal or panel control mode.
  2. For stick, verify correct polarity, dry rod, and a solid work return.
  3. Mode or remote mismatch is a common false-fault path on feature-rich TIG/stick machines.
  4. If the complaint exists only on AC TIG, reset AC settings to a conservative baseline before deeper teardown.

4. Poor arc quality / unstable output

  1. Separate 120 V limitation from true faults; heavier work on 120 V may feel weak without indicating failure.
  2. Inspect work clamp, torch connections, and input path for heat or looseness.
  3. Escalate only after poor performance is confirmed on solid power with known-good accessories.
  4. If DC TIG is healthy and AC TIG is not, stay in the AC-parameter and accessory branch before broadening to the power source.

5. Gas and consumable related faults

  1. Verify bottle pressure, regulator flow, torch hoses, collet-body sealing, and tungsten prep.
  2. AC TIG complaints can be caused by tungsten selection and front-end setup, not just machine settings.
  3. If stick is good, stay in the TIG consumable and gas branch until proven otherwise.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Inspect cooling airflow and any blocked intake or exhaust areas.
  2. Check plug, receptacle, clamp, and torch connections for heating after load.
  3. Repeat faults from a cold start with stripped accessories indicate escalation.
