Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify actual branch voltage and confirm the correct input plug or adapter arrangement.
  2. Remove suspect extension cords and inspect the plug and receptacle for heat damage.
  3. If dead on verified power with a sound power path, escalate.

2. Powers up but no welding output

  1. Prove baseline stick output with dry known-good rod on clean steel.
  2. Inspect the holder lead, work lead, and front connections for looseness or heating.
  3. Confirm the complaint is not tied to one specific input plug or adapter path.
  4. If there is still no stable output, escalate.

3. Feed, arc-start, or cut-start problem

  1. Most start complaints are still rod-condition, amperage, or work-return problems.
  2. Confirm the complaint is not simply a 120 V limitation when heavier rod or longer welds are attempted.
  3. Inspect holder and clamp jaw pressure and cable-end heating because portable farm and shop use often damages the accessory path before the power source.
  4. If starts remain poor on strong power with correct setup, escalate.

4. Poor arc quality / unstable output

  1. Inspect the whole current path for hot points, especially MVP-style plug or adapter hardware and clamp contact.
  2. Separate normal 120 V limits from genuine instability.
  3. If the complaint appears on generator power, retest on known-good utility power before escalating.
  4. Escalate only after the machine remains unstable on verified strong power with known-good leads.

5. Gas and consumable related faults

  1. This model is stick-only; most consumable complaints are electrode-storage or wrong-rod problems.
  2. Rule out wet or oversized electrodes before machine diagnosis.
  3. If one rod family behaves materially worse than another, keep the diagnosis in the consumable path first.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Inspect airflow and dust loading.
  2. Check plug, adapter, clamp, and holder temperatures immediately after the complaint.
  3. Early heat buildup at the adapter or receptacle indicates a supply-path fault first, not an internal thermal fault.
  4. Repeat faulting from a cold start indicates escalation.
