Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify the outlet with a meter and remove extension cords from the test.
  2. Inspect the plug, cord, and case for impact damage from portable use.
  3. If the machine remains dead on a known-good outlet, escalate.

2. Powers up but no welding output

  1. Inspect the holder and clamp leads for loose terminations or broken strands near the strain-relief points.
  2. Retest using a known-good dry electrode on clean steel.
  3. If there is no output with proven leads and work contact, escalate.

3. Feed, arc-start, or cut-start problem

  1. Treat most stick-start complaints as setup faults first: damp rods, undersized rod for available input, poor work return, or too-low amperage.
  2. For lift-TIG complaints, verify torch valve, gas flow, tungsten shape, and polarity/accessory setup.
  3. If SMAW performs normally, the machine itself is usually not the root cause of TIG complaints.

4. Poor arc quality / unstable output

  1. This machine is sensitive to low-voltage supply and extension-cord loss.
  2. Inspect clamp jaws and holder jaws for heat damage and weak grip.
  3. If arc quality is poor directly on a solid outlet with fresh rods and cool leads, escalate.

5. Gas and consumable related faults

  1. For lift-TIG operation, confirm gas bottle pressure, regulator flow, and torch valve action.
  2. Regrind tungsten and inspect collet-body and cup sealing if starts are erratic.
  3. Porosity or tungsten contamination should be treated as accessory/gas faults first.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Confirm airflow paths are clear and cooling is not blocked by dust or soft surfaces.
  2. Inspect the input plug and output leads for heating immediately after the complaint occurs.
  3. Persistent thermal behavior from a cold start indicates escalation.
