Dual-Voltage Expectation Matrix

This annex is for one of the most common false diagnoses in the library: interpreting normal low-voltage performance limits as machine failure.

Use it with dual-voltage or multi-voltage guides in this repository across MIG, TIG, multiprocess, and plasma platforms.

Core rule

Always capture the actual input voltage before interpreting a complaint about weak output, nuisance tripping, or poor performance on thicker material.

Common symptom split

Symptom Likely explanation First move
Weak weld on thicker material normal 120 V limit or branch sag retest on proper 230 or 240 V supply
Plasma cuts poorly at higher demand input limitation or voltage drop retest on higher-voltage supply where supported
Breaker trips on startup or load undersized branch, long extension cord, shared circuit remove extension cord and use correct branch
Machine powers on but feels unstable under arc load branch voltage collapse under load measure or infer branch weakness and simplify supply

Supply-quality checklist

  1. Record actual receptacle type and installed adapter or plug.
  2. Remove extension cords and questionable adapters.
  3. Retest on a known-good higher-voltage branch where supported.
  4. Compare the complaint to the manufacturer's published output envelope for that voltage.
