Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Determine whether the complaint is no crank, cranks but will not run, or runs but no output.
  2. Verify battery state, cable tightness, grounds, and fuel condition.
  3. If the engine cannot be stabilized after external checks, escalate.

2. Powers up but no welding output

  1. Determine whether auxiliary power is healthy while weld output is not.
  2. If auxiliary power is healthy but weld output is not, focus on weld controls, output studs, and feeder path.
  3. If both auxiliary and weld functions degrade under load, inspect engine speed regulation and load management first.

3. Feed, arc-start, or cut-start problem

  1. Confirm weld mode, output range, and lead connections.
  2. If using a wire feeder, verify feeder compatibility and control cabling.
  3. Treat feeder or remote mismatches as separate from the Ranger base machine.

4. Poor arc quality / unstable output

  1. Watch engine speed behavior under load and separate RPM/governor problems from output-path faults.
  2. Inspect output studs, cable lugs, and work-return quality for heat damage.
  3. On engine drives, many weld complaints are actually RPM/governor or load-sharing issues.

5. Gas, air, or consumable related faults

  1. Keep gas and front-end troubleshooting outside the base engine drive when TIG or wire accessories are used.
  2. Inspect feeder consumables, TIG torch path, and hose routing as separate branches.
  3. Do not mix gun or torch complaints with engine-output regulation faults.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Remove nonessential auxiliary loads and retest.
  2. Verify governor response and engine service basics.
  3. Treat fuel, battery, and maintenance issues as first-line causes before generator-end failure.
