Generator And Portable-Power Matrix

This annex is for diagnosing complaints that appear when machines are powered from generators, jobsite power, or questionable portable sources.

Use it with:

portable inverters
dual-voltage MIG and TIG
multiprocess machines
portable plasma cutters
lift-TIG or stick/TIG-capable field units

Core rule

If the complaint appears only on portable power, prove the source before blaming the machine.

Symptom matrix

Portable-power checklist

Document the actual source type.
Remove extension cords and questionable adapters.
Retest on a known-good branch or shop supply if available.
Compare behavior cold versus under load.
If the complaint disappears on stable power, stop broadening the diagnosis.

By machine class

Portable TIG and stick/TIG

Stickmate 160i, Maxstar, Dynasty, Square Wave TIG 200, and similar units can look faulty when the real problem is poor portable-source quality.
TIG is often more sensitive to setup and source quality than stick.

Dual-voltage MIG and multiprocess

POWER MIG 211i, Millermatic 211 PRO, Multimatic, POWER MIG 210 MP, POWER MIG 215 MPi, and similar models can be misdiagnosed on portable branches with voltage sag or weak adapters.

Portable plasma

Compact plasma cutters combine source-quality sensitivity with extension-cord and air-side issues.
Remove as many jobsite variables as possible before escalating.

Common false diagnoses

"display board is bad" when the portable source is unstable
"TIG start problem" when the machine is running from weak portable power
"plasma cutter is weak" when the source and extension path are the real problem

Escalate sooner when

the machine remains abnormal on known-good stable power
the complaint affects multiple process paths independent of source
there is clear internal fault behavior from a cold start on verified input
