Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify actual supply voltage.
  2. Inspect plug, cord, and switch for heat or looseness.
  3. If dead on verified power, escalate rather than assuming a simple gun or trigger problem.

2. Powers up but no welding output

  1. Clamp to clean parent metal.
  2. Tighten polarity and output lugs.
  3. Replace the contact tip if feed exists but the arc does not.
  4. If the complaint disappears on one clamp point only, keep the diagnosis in the return path first.

3. Feed problem

  1. Reset drive pressure.
  2. Compare feed with and without the tip installed.
  3. Inspect liner contamination and spool drag.
  4. If feed becomes healthy with the tip removed, stay in the gun path instead of broadening to feeder motor or board faults.

4. Poor arc quality / unstable output

  1. Return to a known steel MIG baseline with known gas.
  2. Confirm base-metal cleanliness and clamp quality.
  3. Keep polarity, gas, and consumables in the first branch before deeper electrical diagnosis.

5. Gas and consumable related faults

  1. Verify gas flow at the regulator.
  2. Replace nozzle and tip if contaminated or overheated.
  3. Gas complaints that disappear with one cylinder or regulator belong in the utility branch first.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Determine whether the issue appears only after sustained welding.
  2. Inspect gun neck and lugs for heat buildup.
  3. Repeated cold-start loss of output should be escalated.
