Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify actual receptacle voltage and branch integrity.
  2. Inspect plug blades, cord, and power switch for heat damage or looseness.
  3. If the fan or lights never respond on known-good input, escalate rather than guessing at internal transformer or control failure.

2. Powers up but no welding output

  1. Confirm the work clamp is on clean parent metal, not paint, rust, or a loose fixture.
  2. Check polarity studs and cable lugs for looseness or heat discoloration.
  3. If the wire feeds but arc is absent, replace the contact tip and inspect the gun neck and trigger path.

3. Feed problem

  1. Back off drive tension and reset it to the minimum needed for reliable feed.
  2. Remove the contact tip and test bare-wire feed through the gun.
  3. If feed improves with the tip removed, replace the tip and inspect for burnback or wrong-size consumables.
  4. Inspect liner cleanliness and spool-brake drag.

4. Poor arc quality or unstable output

  1. Return to a basic steel MIG setup with known-good wire and gas.
  2. Confirm polarity matches the wire type.
  3. Check base-metal cleanliness and clamp pressure before blaming the machine.

5. Gas and consumable related faults

  1. Verify cylinder pressure and actual regulator flow.
  2. Inspect hose connections for leaks.
  3. Replace suspect nozzle and tip before chasing a deeper fault.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Note whether the complaint appears only after a long weld session.
  2. Inspect gun-neck heat, tip burnback frequency, and hot cable lugs.
  3. If the machine drops output from a cold start, escalate.
