Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify actual 230 V supply at the receptacle.
  2. Inspect plug, cord, and switch for looseness or heat.
  3. If dead on verified supply, escalate rather than assuming a simple gun or trigger fault.

2. Powers up but no welding output

  1. Clamp to bright metal.
  2. Confirm polarity studs are tight.
  3. Replace the contact tip if the wire feeds but no stable arc forms.
  4. If the complaint disappears on one clamp point only, keep the diagnosis in the return path first.

3. Feed problem

  1. Reset drive pressure.
  2. Compare feed with the tip removed.
  3. Inspect liner cleanliness and spool drag.
  4. If feed becomes healthy with the tip removed, stay in the gun path instead of broadening to feeder motor or board faults.

4. Poor arc quality / unstable output

  1. Return to a basic steel MIG setup with known gas.
  2. Check workpiece cleanliness and work-return quality.
  3. Keep gas, polarity, and consumables in the first branch before deeper electrical diagnosis.

5. Gas and consumable related faults

  1. Verify regulator flow and hose sealing.
  2. Replace nozzle and tip if damaged or contaminated.
  3. Gas complaints that disappear with one cylinder or regulator belong in the utility branch first.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Record whether the issue appears only during longer welds.
  2. Inspect hot consumables and output lugs immediately after the event.
  3. If the complaint appears only after connection heating, keep the diagnosis in the current path first.
