Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify actual line voltage at the 230 V receptacle instead of assuming the branch is healthy.
  2. Inspect the plug, cord, switch, and visible input wiring for looseness or heat damage.
  3. If the unit remains dead on verified input, escalate instead of broadening into feeder or consumable theory.

2. Powers up but no welding output

  1. Confirm tight polarity connections and a clean work-return path.
  2. Clamp to bright metal and inspect the work lead for heat or looseness.
  3. Replace the contact tip before deeper diagnosis when feed exists but arc does not.
  4. If arc returns only when the clamp location changes, keep the diagnosis in the return path first.

3. Feed problem

  1. Reset drive-roll pressure to the minimum needed for reliable feed.
  2. Remove the tip and compare feed quality.
  3. Inspect spool drag, liner contamination, and gun cable bends.
  4. If feed becomes normal with the tip removed, stay in the gun path instead of blaming the machine.

4. Poor arc quality / unstable output

  1. Normalize to basic steel MIG with known gas or a known-good flux-cored baseline.
  2. Check workpiece cleanliness and clamp quality.
  3. Confirm the wire type matches the polarity before deeper electrical diagnosis.

5. Gas and consumable related faults

  1. Verify actual gas flow and hose sealing.
  2. Replace worn nozzle and tip.
  3. If porosity disappears with one cylinder, regulator, or hose set, keep the complaint in the gas path first.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Document whether the problem appears only at higher output or after longer welds.
  2. Inspect hot consumables, cable lugs, and plug blades immediately after the event.
  3. Complaints that appear only after connection heating belong in the current path before they belong in the machine core.
