Long-Lead, Extension-Cord, And Voltage-Drop Matrix

This annex is for complaints caused by excessive lead length, extension cords, or voltage drop under load.

Use it with:

Core rule

If the machine is being run through long cords or long lead sets, source and path losses belong in the first diagnostic branch.

Symptom matrix

Symptom Most likely path-loss branch High-value first move
Weak arc on site but fine in shop extension-cord voltage drop remove cord and retest direct
Breaker trips or machine feels soft on 120 V long light-gauge cord or weak branch move to direct correct circuit
Plasma weak on heavy material cord loss plus lower-voltage input retest on direct higher-voltage service
Engine-driven weld weak with long leads heated lugs or lead-path loss shorten path and inspect lead temperature

Voltage-drop checklist

  1. Document actual extension-cord use, length, and source type.
  2. Remove the cord or shorten the path as much as possible.
  3. Retest on direct source power.
  4. Compare behavior to the published output envelope for the actual supply.
