Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify actual input voltage and inspect plug, cord, and visible damage.
  2. Remove questionable extension arrangements.
  3. If the unit is dead on verified input, escalate.

2. Powers up but no plasma output

  1. Confirm the machine reaches ready state with clean, dry air.
  2. Replace the consumable front end and inspect the torch head.
  3. Clamp to clean parent metal and inspect the work-return path.
  4. If ready state is normal but output is absent in both hand and CNC modes, escalate after torch and air checks.

3. Feed, arc-start, or cut-start problem

  1. Split hand mode from CNC mode immediately.
  2. If hand cutting works, keep the diagnosis in the CNC/interface branch.
  3. If neither works, start with air, clamp, consumables, and source power.
  4. Keep signal-path and controller issues out of the power-source branch until the handheld baseline is proven.

4. Poor arc quality / unstable output

  1. Verify dry clean air, correct pressure, and fresh nozzle and electrode.
  2. Retest on clean mild steel in hand mode before blaming the CNC side.
  3. If CNC-only cut quality is poor, inspect torch-height assumptions, machine-torch alignment, and controller triggering rather than the power section.

5. Gas, air, or consumable related faults

  1. Inspect filters, dryers, drains, and actual compressor output under flow.
  2. Replace worn nozzle, electrode, and cap components.
  3. CNC-capable plasma units must be split into torch/power issues versus interface issues early.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Record whether the problem appears only after several minutes of cutting or only in CNC duty.
  2. Inspect torch lead, clamp cable, and machine-torch interface for heat buildup or intermittent connection.
  3. Repeated faults in both modes with known-good air and consumables should be escalated.
