Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify outlet voltage and remove questionable extension cords.
  2. Inspect plug, cord, and visible external damage.
  3. If the unit is dead on verified input, escalate.

2. Powers up but no plasma output

  1. Confirm the machine reaches ready state with clean, dry air.
  2. Inspect consumable stack order and retaining-cap seating.
  3. Clamp to clean parent metal and inspect the work-return path.
  4. If ready state is normal but there is still no output, escalate after torch and air checks.

3. Start or transfer problem

  1. Separate no-pilot from no-transfer behavior.
  2. If pilot exists but transfer fails, inspect clamp location and coated work surfaces first.
  3. If pilot is absent, keep the first branch in air readiness and consumable seating.
  4. If transfer returns on one clean coupon but not another, stay in the workpiece/clamp branch first.

4. Poor cut quality / unstable output

  1. Compare the job to the machine's light-duty 120 V range before assuming a fault.
  2. Retest on clean mild steel with conservative speed and proper standoff.
  3. Small plasma units are overwhelmingly affected by air quality and operator technique.
  4. If the complaint disappears on thinner clean steel, do not broaden into internal-failure assumptions.

5. Gas, air, or consumable related faults

  1. Inspect filters, dryers, drains, and actual compressor output under flow.
  2. Replace worn nozzle, electrode, and cap components.
  3. Keep wet-air problems separate from true internal faults.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Record whether the problem appears only after several minutes of cutting.
  2. Inspect hot plug blades, torch lead, and clamp cable for heat buildup.
  3. Repeated faults with known-good air and verified power should be escalated.
