Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify actual source voltage and eliminate questionable extension cords.
  2. Inspect cord, plug, and visible damage.
  3. If the unit remains dead on verified source power, escalate.

2. Powers up but no plasma output

  1. Confirm ready state with clean, dry air.
  2. Reseat the consumable stack and inspect the retaining cap.
  3. Clamp to clean parent metal and inspect the work-return path.
  4. If ready state is normal but no output occurs, escalate after torch and air checks.

3. Start or transfer problem

  1. Separate no-pilot from no-transfer behavior.
  2. If pilot occurs but does not transfer, inspect clamp location and workpiece coating first.
  3. If pilot is absent, keep the first branch in air and consumable readiness.

4. Poor cut quality or unstable output

  1. Retest on clean mild steel with conservative travel speed and proper standoff.
  2. Replace worn consumables and verify air dryness and flow.
  3. Small portable plasma units are often limited by source and air quality before internal faults.

5. Gas, air, or consumable related faults

  1. Inspect filters, dryers, drains, and actual compressor output.
  2. Replace suspect nozzle, electrode, and shield.
  3. Wet air and low compressor flow commonly mimic machine failure.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Check fan operation and blocked airflow.
  2. Inspect torch lead, clamp cable, and plug blades for heating.
  3. Repeated hot-run faults with good air and source quality should be escalated.
