Failure patterns and repair logic

1. No power / dead machine

  1. Verify the input-source voltage and remove questionable extension-cord arrangements.
  2. Inspect cord, plug, and visible external damage.
  3. If the unit is dead on verified source power, escalate.

2. Powers up but no plasma output

  1. Confirm the machine reaches ready state with clean, dry air.
  2. Reseat the consumable stack and inspect the retaining cap.
  3. Clamp to clean parent metal and inspect the work-return path.
  4. If ready state is normal but there is still no output, escalate after torch and air-path checks.

3. Start or transfer problem

  1. Separate no-pilot from no-transfer behavior.
  2. If pilot occurs but transfer fails, keep the first branch in clamp contact and workpiece condition.
  3. If pilot is absent, inspect air, consumable seating, and torch-lead condition first.

4. Poor cut quality or unstable output

  1. Retest on clean mild steel with conservative speed and proper standoff.
  2. Replace suspect consumables and verify actual air quality, not just compressor pressure.
  3. On portable plasma units, poor cut quality is usually air- or consumable-related before electronics.

5. Gas, air, or consumable related faults

  1. Inspect filters, drains, and water traps and confirm airflow under load.
  2. Replace worn electrode and nozzle and inspect shield or cap condition.
  3. Wet air remains a leading cause of false machine-failure complaints.

6. Intermittent or heat-related behavior

  1. Check fan operation and blocked airflow.
  2. Inspect torch lead, plug, and clamp for heat buildup.
  3. Repeated hot-run faults with known-good air and source should be escalated.
