Shaping the Future of Welding: Advances in Modelling and Simulation

NAFEMS has scheduled a one-day Welding Modelling and Simulation Seminar for Wednesday, 30 September 2026. The event is dedicated to current advances in the modelling and simulation of welding, with attention to industrial challenges, the impact of simulation on design and manufacturing, and opportunities created by new computational methods and artificial intelligence.

The seminar topics include weld pool modelling, validation techniques, linking micro-scale and macro-scale behaviour, scaling simulations up to assemblies, benchmarking, and standardization. The program is framed around the role of simulation in enabling safer, faster, and more sustainable welding processes.

Who Should Attend

The seminar is intended for academics, industrial practitioners, simulation specialists, welding engineers, materials scientists, research students, and decision-makers in advanced manufacturing who want to stay current with welding innovation.

Preliminary Agenda

The agenda includes presentations from TWI, Cranfield University, the University of Manchester, the University of Oxford, Warwick Manufacturing Group, Frazer-Nash Consultancy, Equinor, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar Land Rover, Boeing, and Amentum.

Listed topics include advances in weld modelling for nuclear materials with solid-state phase transformations; predicting weld residual stresses in steels; computational frameworks to predict weld integrity; mathematical modelling frameworks for computational metallurgy; Bayesian optimisation for process parameter selection; FEA simulations and measurements of weld residual stresses during girth welding; a graded approach to weld simulation for industrial applications; laser welding distortion in automotive roof structures; residual stress and distortion prediction in directed energy deposition processes; and simulation of post-weld heat treatment of ferritic steel welds.

The seminar closes with a panel discussion on future developments and applications in welding modelling and simulation.
